In 2005 I was at the California Fair track in Santa Rosa and watched a 2 yo. out of More Than Ready make his debut, and absolutely obliterate the track record, covering 5.5F in 1:01 and change, earning a 102 Beyer. Sharing the same connections as that year's superstar Lost in The Fog (Aleo/Gilchrist), he garnered a little attention as a potential Derby prospect, but only raced twice more, winning an allowance and a small stakes before retiring due to injury.
I had added him to my watch list after his first race, and after he retired I forgot all about him...until, lo and behold, he pops up a few months ago having worked out down in Florida. Hey now, what the hells going on? Well apparently poor Frisco didn't work out so well at stud. He covered only 17 mares, resulting in 2 dropped foals, one of which sold for a measely $2,500.
So Frisco is back, making his return in the Hilton Garden Inn Stakes ($85K) at Tampa this Saturday. Can't help but root for the guy, things didn't turned out as planned for a horse with such a promising debut, I hope he's at least healthy and happy to be back racing, and still able to flash some of that speed. Should be fun.
