Horse Racing Message Board Forum Search Engine

Was playing around with some new tools and decided we should have a Search Engine just for Horse Racing message boards. So when you enter a search term in the box, it returns results from the horse racing forums listed below. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has spent copious time doing searches on my favorite message board, so this is a meta search, it returns results from ALL of them at the same time, so you can see if anyone has been talking about that subject on any of the boards.

You can either bookmark the search engine as a stand alone page, or integrate it into your website by grabbing the gadget (you'll get what is over there in the corner of this blog>>>).

Go here to check it out:

Racing Partnerships, Organized and Online

There is a new site up for anyone interested in racing partnerships around the US and Canada, http://www.northamericanracingpartnerships.com

It looks like a great resource for anyone looking into owning a Racehorse, as this information can be hard to find organized this nicely. Using a partnership, it really does make owning a racehorse very cost effective. Check it out.

Frisco Star Returns

In 2005 I was at the California Fair track in Santa Rosa and watched a 2 yo. out of More Than Ready make his debut, and absolutely obliterate the track record, covering 5.5F in 1:01 and change, earning a 102 Beyer. Sharing the same connections as that year's superstar Lost in The Fog (Aleo/Gilchrist), he garnered a little attention as a potential Derby prospect, but only raced twice more, winning an allowance and a small stakes before retiring due to injury.

I had added him to my watch list after his first race, and after he retired I forgot all about him...until, lo and behold, he pops up a few months ago having worked out down in Florida. Hey now, what the hells going on? Well apparently poor Frisco didn't work out so well at stud. He covered only 17 mares, resulting in 2 dropped foals, one of which sold for a measely $2,500.

So Frisco is back, making his return in the Hilton Garden Inn Stakes ($85K) at Tampa this Saturday. Can't help but root for the guy, things didn't turned out as planned for a horse with such a promising debut, I hope he's at least healthy and happy to be back racing, and still able to flash some of that speed. Should be fun.

Power Rating Talk

So I'm about to make some more changes, thought I'd log in with where I am right now. I don't mean any of this to come off like I know what I'm doing, because I'd be the first to admit I don't, I'm just trying to figure it out.

What I'm working on right now is just one piece of it, Dirt Sprints, Non Maiden, 3yo and Up. Posted are some graphs showing some base line information.

The first graph shows the Win % of all the horses by Odds rank, side by side with Win % by my power rating rank. You can see the top choice of the public wins at around 35%, while my power rating is around 31%.

The second graph shows the ROI by Odds Rank, side by side with the ROI by my power rating rank. My horses, top ranked, losed around 8.5c on the dollar, public choice almost twice that. But keep in mind these are in sample horses, the rating is built on the same data you see here. Need to do significantly better because we expect to see a big drop off when we shift to new data.

The third graph is just another breakout of Win % by Power Rating Gap, i.e. the rating numeric difference relative to the top ranked horse (or if the top rated, the 2nd rated). You can see how nice the curve is, this is the basis for an odds line.

So the changes I'm putting now are moving some of the data over to track specific from generic all burger. I have two components each that are being factored into the power rating for early pace and late pace: rank and gap. I am adding in track specific data for early and late RANK only. I want to do a lot of this piece meal so I can see what effect it has. But it does take a long time to rebuild the database between changes, so I won't be doing everything singly.

Anyhooters -- that is what I'm up to right now. I'll be updating these three graphs in the next few days. There is something a little quirky about the way this program works....I'm not going to get into it now, but by adding some track specific data you lose the ability to have generic data for the other tracks. I'm not worrying about that right now as I have majority of all races covered...but it will have to be dealt with.
